Teaching assistants and certain other employees at the University of California, Davis, have voted for union representation, according to the results of an election tabulated today.
The California Public Employment Relations Board declared at its San Francisco office today that the teaching assistants and others voted 382 to 183 for representation by the Association of Graduate Student Employees-United Auto Workers in collective bargaining. There were 10 challenged ballots.
About 44 percent of 1,280 eligible individuals voted over three days in May. They included teaching assistants, readers, tutors, associates-in, acting instructors, nursery school instructors and community teaching fellows.
Dennis Shimek, associate vice chancellor for human resources at UC Davis, says the university will respect the decision of the election and is ready to begin negotiations.
"The campus interest is and has been to ensure the best possible academic experience," Shimek says. "This interest, support, and commitment will not change."
