Thanksgiving Turkey Plentiful Despite State Production Drop

As Thanksgiving approaches and California consumers plan their holiday meals, plenty of turkeys should be available even though state turkey production is falling, says a UC Davis researcher. The state's turkey production industry has fallen in national standings, so that the state ranks fourth as a turkey producer, behind North Carolina, Minnesota and Arkansas, says John Voris, UC turkey production specialist based at the Kearney Agricultural Center. Increasing nuisance complaints from urban communities and rising feed costs are the primary factors behind the state's turkey production decline. But state consumers should still find plenty of the birds from which to choose, because favorable pricing conditions prompt out-of-state producers to sell turkeys here.
