Three Faculty Awarded Fulbright Grants

Fulbright Scholar Grants have been awarded to three faculty members at the University of California, Davis, enabling them to teach and consult in Argentina, the Czech Republic and Portugal during the 1994-95 academic year. Charles Hjerpe, Subodh Jain and Washek Pfeffer were selected for this honor based on their academic and professional qualifications, along with their ability and willingness to participate in educational and cultural exchange with people in other countries. Hjerpe, professor emeritus of veterinary medicine and former director of the UC Davis Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital, will serve as a consultant at the Technical University of Lisbon, Portugal. An expert in herd health and management of beef and dairy cattle, Hjerpe will help the university establish a veterinary medical teaching hospital. Jain, professor emeritus of agronomy and range science, will teach courses in ecology at the University of Rio Cuarto, Argentina. He also will serve as a consultant to several agricultural field stations in Argentina. Jain is a population geneticist with an interest in conservation biology and new agronomic crops. Pfeffer, professor emeritus of mathematics and an authority on analysis, is currently lecturing at Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic. Fulbright grants are awarded annually to American students, teachers and scholars to study, teach and conduct research in more than 130 countries around the world. The grants also go to foreign scholars to conduct similar activities in the United States.
