Charges related to the stabbing of a UC Davis sophomore were read against Johnny Shao Tien in Yolo County Superior Court in Woodland today, but his arraignment has been postponed until 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 11. He will appear in Department 9.
Judge W. Arvid Johnson read three charges against Tien: attempted murder with the use of a deadly weapon and the infliction of great bodily injury during domestic violence; aggravated mayhem with the use of a deadly weapon and the infliction of great bodily injury during domestic violence; and the infliction of corporal injury on a former cohabitant with the use of a deadly weapon.
Tien asked the court to postpone the arraignment because he had not yet been able to talk with the lawyer hired by his family.
He was arrested at his Rowland Heights home in Los Angeles County early Saturday after a UC Davis student was stabbed Friday morning in her campus apartment. He is an acquaintance of the victim and had taken a Summer Sessions II course at UC Davis in 1999.
The 20-year-old victim, whose name is being withheld due to the nature of the attack, was treated at the UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento over the weekend and released. She has a punctured lung and stab wounds to the chest, back and shoulder area but is expected to make a full recovery.
DIRECTIONS: Yolo County Superior Court is at 725 Court St. at the corner of Third and Court streets. Department 9 is at 213 Third St., near Court Street.
