A 12-story, $156 milion addition to the UC Davis Medical Center has been approved by the UC Regents. Known as Tower II and to be built adjacent to Tower I at the existing hospital complex in Sacramento, the new structure will add 416,000 more square feet of space to the hospital and increase the number of licensed beds by 105 to a total of 588 by the summer of 1998. Tower II will house three 35-bed nursing units, additional diagnostic radiology services, distribution/receiving areas, and academic and patient care areas. It also will provide shelled-in space for six additional floors of patient rooms and associated medical services, to be completed as needed. The roof will accommodate a new heliport for UCDMC's Life Flight helicopter, now based at ground level. Groundbreaking is targeted for the summer of 1995, and completion is planned in the summer of 1998.
