When does a company's decision to forbid others to use its trademark create a free speech problem? That, among other issues concerning the symbols that identify goods and services, was dealt with recently by UC Davis law students Kathryn Gimple and Mitchell Weatherly when they argued trademark law -- winning the 1992-93 U.S. Trademark Association's Saul Lefkowitz National Moot Court Competition held recently in Washington, D.C. The competition was established to honor the late longtime chair of the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board and focuses on current problems and issues in trademark and unfair competition law. The students brought home the third national moot court championship in the law school's history. UC Davis law students Marc Gorelnik and John C. Baum, last year's Lefkowitz champions, coached the team. Law professor Leslie Kurtz served as adviser.
