Traditional Native American dances have been added to the reception for the "Sacred Spaces, Spirit Places" art exhibition to be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 13, at the Memorial Union Art Gallery at the University of California, Davis.
The dances will be performed by the Maidu Dancers at 5 p.m. in the Freeborn Patio area outside the gallery. The group formed in 1973 as students of songs, dance, ceremony, language and culture taught by Frank Day, a Concow Maidu who is among the five Native American artists whose works are featured in "Sacred Spaces, Spirit Places." The other artists are Dalbert Castro, Frank LaPena, Harry Fonseca and Frank Tuttle.
The dancers are predominantly Maidu, although their tribal lines include Miiwak, Wintu, Pomo and Washo. The group is devoted to performing the traditional dances as a way of preserving them and expressing their spiritual messages.
The reception is free and open to the public. For more information, call (916) 752-2885.
