The TRW Foundation has announced a gift of $250,000 to UC Davis' College of Engineering. The gift, to be paid over a period of five years, will be used to develop advanced research laboratories for students studying signal processing and telecommunications.
Signal processing and telecommunications involve manipulation, transmission and display of electrical signals carrying visual, audio and other types of information.
This is a key gift in the second phase of the college's $25 million fund-raising campaign, scheduled to begin officially in 1993.
"As a leader in the field of complex signal processing for commercial, scientific and earth observation purposes, TRW believes it is fitting for our foundation to encourage young engineers to enter this important field," said Stephen J. Lukasik, vice president for technology of TRW's Space and Defense Sector and a member of the company committee that reviews grant requests from universities and colleges. "The work being done at UC Davis is among the best in the country."
M.S. Ghausi, dean of the college, noted that the contribution builds on the strong relationships that exist between the college and TRW. The college's Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering has a long history with TRW. During the past seven years the company has provided the university with research funding in the area of signal processing, and two of the company's former engineers have become members of the campus's faculty.
