After almost 35 years in research, UC Davis pathologist and virologist Murray Gardner wanted to keep the beat going when he retired. So the emeritus professor endowed a seminar series of visiting speakers that he hopes will bring together researchers from all corners of UC Davis.
The next event in the seminar series will be a scientific double bill. On Friday, Oct. 27, Stuart Levy, professor of medicine at Tufts University, Boston, will speak on "Antibiotic resistance: bacteria on the defense," followed by his twin brother Jay Levy, professor of medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, who will speak on "HIV/AIDS: the host versus the virus."
Jay Levy, who helped identify the AIDS virus, has an international reputation in HIV and AIDS research. His brother Stuart Levy is renowned for his work on antibiotic resistance in bacteria. His book, "The antibiotic paradox: how miracle drugs are destroying the miracle," has been widely cited in both the lay and scientific media.
The talks will be held at 170 Schalm Hall at the School of Veterinary Medicine starting at 4 p.m., Oct. 27, followed by a reception at the Center for Comparative Medicine. Gardner, who plays in a swing band, promises to entertain at the piano as well.
