UC Davis $30,000 Teaching Prize to Be Announced in Class Tomorrow

What: Two weeks before finals, students know what to expect when they come to class. Except for tomorrow -- when the announcement of the 2000 UC Davis Prize for Undergraduate Teaching and Scholarly Achievement will take them by surprise. The students will be the first to discover their professor's evolved teaching takes the cake, so to speak, when their professor wins the nation's largest teaching award. When: 3 p.m., Thursday, March 2 Where: Room 194, Young Hall, UC Davis Visuals: UC Davis Chancellor Larry Vanderhoef will interrupt the class at 3:15 p.m. when he takes a cake into the lecture room and announces the $30,000 prize. He will enter the lecture hall from the south side of the building; the room is accessible directly from the outside of the building. A representative from the UC Davis Foundation, which awards the prize, also will talk. Students will be available for comment following the presentations. Directions: From Interstate 80, exit at Richards Boulevard, proceed north toward the campus. Turn left onto First Street, then right onto A Street. Young Hall is on the left side of the street and is a three-story, pale-yellow building. Parking is available in a lot adjacent to Dutton Hall, just south of Young Hall. Reporters in unmarked cars should place a business card on the dashboard. Background: The teaching prize, sponsored by the UC Davis Foundation, began in 1988, to recognize exceptional teaching and research by UC Davis faculty members. The prize is based on recommendations of both academic peers and students.
