UC Davis alumnus Robert C. Morrison, a Stockton business attorney, has been selected by the Cal Aggie Alumni Association Board of Directors to serve as an alumni regent of the University of California. The term will begin on July 1, 2000, and end on June 30, 2002. Morrison was selected by a vote of the CAAA board from a pool of candidates consisting of UC Davis alumni who had served as presidents of the Cal Aggie Alumni Association. Morrison earned his bachelor's degree in rhetoric from UC Davis in 1968 and his Juris Doctor from the UC Davis School of Law in 1971. He also holds an M.B.A. from Golden Gate University (1986). In June, he will end his two-year term as president of the board of directors of the CAAA. He has been a member of the board of directors since 1994. The UC Board of Regents, made up of 26 members, governs the University of California as established by the California Constitution. In addition to ex officio members, such as the governor and the president of the University of California, there are 18 citizens appointed for 12-year terms by the governor and confirmed by the state senate. Officially, Morrison will assume the role of treasurer of the Alumni Associations of the University of California and, by virtue of that office, will serve as a nonvoting alumni regent designate for the first year of his term. For the second year, he will serve concurrently as AAUC vice president and a voting alumni regent. "It is a tremendous honor to serve as an alumni regent of the University of California," said Morrison. "The alumni regent positions exist to ensure that the alumni perspective is factored into the decision-making process that guides the university. To deliver the benefit of alumni experience to the process and to mobilize the broadest possible support of alumni for the UC system will be my highest calling as regent." Morrison is a business attorney at Neumiller & Beardslee in Stockton, for which he has served as managing director. He has an extensive record of public service to both UC Davis and his community. He has been a member of the Davis Chancellors Club since 1987; he also serves on the board of trustees for the UC Davis Foundation. His extensive list of civic activities includes board member and member of the executive committee of the Lassen Volcanic National Park Foundation, Pacific Little League board member and president and co-chair of the Stockton Women's Center Dawn House Campaign supporting a battered women's shelter. He has served as a San Joaquin County Board of Supervisors appointee to the board of the San Joaquin County Economic Development Association, for which he also served as president, and to the Camanche Regional Park Advisory Board, for which he served two terms as president. Morrison's wife, Jan, a UC Davis alumna (1969), is a teacher in the Stockton Unified School District. His daughter, a 1999 UC Davis graduate, will earn her teaching credential from UC Davis in June and has accepted a teaching position in Milpitas. His son is an undergraduate at UC Davis. "Efficient delivery of undergraduate education, K-14 outreach, and continuing education and training of existing teachers are all high priorities of the University of California," said Morrison. "I expect to draw on the experiences of the other members of my family and their associates as the regents address these issues." Morrison was an excellent choice for alumni regent, says CAAA Executive Director Robert A. Kerr. "He is analytical, open to diverse opinions and seeks information from his constituents, the alumni of the university. Having a regent from UC Davis in addition to the chancellor brings prestige to the campus as well as first-hand information on important matters facing the university and a second UC Davis voice in the regents' deliberations."
