UC Davis Artist Exhibits Contemporary Native American Art

Exhibit Title: "George Longfish: Paintings and Masks, 1967 to the Present" Dates: Part I: The Early Years March 1-March 22 Part II: Recent Works March 30-April 28 Where: Memorial Union Art Gallery Second floor Memorial Union University of California, Davis Hours: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Closed other weekends except by appointment Reception: 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, April 2 Artist's Talk and Film Presentation: Noon on Thursday, March 18, in the gallery George Longfish, a University of California, Davis, professor, will display 20 years of his paintings, drawings and sculptures in a two-part exhibition that opens March 1 at the Memorial Union Art Gallery. A diverse selection of Longfish's contemporary Native American art will be shown, from his paintings and mixed media displayed in his first Chicago exhibitions, to his "Dog Soldier Series" first shown in Sacramento in 1978 in which he begins to incorporate cultural information and Native American issues. Longfish teaches in the Native American Studies program at UC Davis, and has been on the faculty since 1973. Two short films made by Longfish while he was a graduate student at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago will be shown at noon on Thursday, March 18. The exhibitions, lecture and receptions are free and open to the public. The gallery is accessible by wheelchair.
