UC Davis Biological Sciences Educators

-- Five UC Davis biological sciences educators were among 251 new fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. The association honors those of its members whose efforts on behalf of the advancement of science and engineering are scientifically or socially distinguished. Agronomy and range science professor Paul Gepts was honored for research and teaching on the genetic structure, evolution and domestication of crop plants. Entomology professor James Carey was honored for distinguished contributions to the fields of biodemography and invasion biology. Professor Michael Dahmus, who also serves as chair for molecular and cellular biology, was recognized for original research on eukaryotic RNA polymerase. Chemistry and molecular and cellular biology professor Carl Schmid was honored for research in molecular genetics in the area of regulation and translation. And molecular and cellular biology professor Irwin Segel was recognized for research on the transport and metabolism of sulfur and nitrogen compounds and for contributions to teaching with the text "Enzyme Kinetics."
