UC Davis Class of '94 Graduate Students Art Exhibition

Exhibit Title: "Graduate Students in Art: The Class of 1994" Dates: September 27 through October 22 Where: Memorial Union Art Gallery 2nd floor, Memorial Union University of California, Davis Hours: 9 a.m to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday Reception: 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, October 6 Artists: Megan Burns, Elizabeth Castaneda, Camille Garcia, Jehanne-Marie Gavarini, Laura Hartwick, Gale Jesi, Kelly McLane, Brody Reiman, K.C. Rosenberg and Hanna Von Goeler Paintings, constructions and sculptures recently completed by 10 second-year graduate students are featured in "Graduate Students in Art: The Class of 1994." The exhibition provides the only opportunity for the entire class to be shown as a group during its second year of study. Each artist will be represented by two or more works. Most work in several different media or materials simultaneously, as opposed to the traditional concept that artists should learn and be trained in a particular medium such as painting. Some of the works to be shown will include a floor installation by Jehanne-Marie Gavarini made of cast and sewn latex, cloth and selected objects. Gavarini's untitled installation examines cultural issues with regard to gender roles and cultural symbolism. Gale Jesi will exhibit a 7-foot tall sculpture in the shape of a pair of legs made from discarded men's leather belts. Jesi's work hinges on visual/verbal puns and double meaning. Laura Hartwick will display her assemblages of multiple-paneled paintings that resemble enlarged pages from comic books. Hartwick combines a folk-art style of representation and text to convey homespun narratives about nature, humor and the human condition. The exhibition and reception are free and open to the public. The gallery is accessible by wheelchair. Metered visitor parking is available in the parking garage on Howard Way. Group visits are available by advance appointment.
