What: UC Davis environmental design students will build part of a full-scale university campus from nearly 200 hay bales. Architectural features and monuments, including a French Chateaux-inspired gathering place in front of a theater, a fountain and an amphitheater, will be part of the design. The "campus" will represent an actual site along Old Davis Road, starting at the University Club and going east to the site of the proposed Environmental Design building. The "hay campus" will be on display through June 8 and is part of a class project.
When: Wednesday, May 25
8 a.m. to noon
Where: East and north of La Rue Road, in the field south of the UC Davis Dairy Barn.
Visuals: The 125-pound hay bales will be put into place in the structures, which include a triumphal portal to mark the entryway into the "hay campus" and a stepped pyramid similar to a Mayan temple. UC Davis students will make last-minute adjustments to their campus design, which will be 200 feet long, up to 8 feet tall and as wide as 65 feet in certain areas.
Directions: From Sacramento, take Interstate 80 to Highway 113 North. From Highway 113, take the Hutchison Drive exit. Turn right onto La Rue Road at the first stoplight on campus. Continue on La Rue Road, around bend. To your left, you will see the "hay campus."
