The nonprofit organization that oversees private fund raising for the University of California, Davis, has named new officers and trustees to its board.
Dr. Julita Fong and Norman Weil are chair and vice chair, respectively, of UC Davis Foundation's board. The new trustees are Kathleen Behrens, Fred Corson, Karl Gerdes, Bret Hewitt, Robert Morrison, Gene Pendergast, Charles Soderquist and Robert Tate.
In addition, C. John Tupper, Rex Hime, and James Willett were elected to another term.
Kathleen Behrens '74, Ph.D. '80, is managing director of the venture capital division of Robertson Stephens & Co., one of the largest security brokerage, investment banking and venture capital firms in the Bay Area. Behrens is a member of the Davis Chancellor's Club and the Cal Aggie Alumni Association.
From Michigan, Fred Corson '64, Ph.D. '67, vice president of research and development for the Dow Chemical Company, maintains ties to UC Davis by serving as executive contact to UC Davis for Dow. Corson was a star center on the UC Davis football team and received a citation for excellence from the chemistry department.
Dr. Julita Fong is laboratory director of Fong Paternity Laboratory in Sacramento. Fong has received the Soroptomist of the Year Award and the National Society of Fund-raising Executives Outstanding Philanthropist Award and was co-chair of the recently concluded and successful $16.4 million Students First Campaign for UC Davis.
Karl Gerdes, M.S. '73, Ph.D. '84, is a chemical engineer with Chevron Research Company in Richmond, CA. He was chair of the College of Engineering's Students First mini-Campaign and is an active member of CAAA.
Involved in student government while at UC Davis, Bret Hewitt '76, M.A. '83, of Washington, D.C., is a consultant with Cambridge Associates Inc., a firm specializing in investment strategies for nonprofit organizations. He is a former member of the CAAA board. He also coordinated the CAAA National Chapter for several years and is the co-founder of the New York City CAAA Chapter.
Rex S. Hime '69, J.D. '72, is chief executive officer of California Business Properties Association in Sacramento, a statewide legislative advocacy organization for the commercial-industrial real estate industry. Hime is immediate past president of CAAA.
Robert Morrison '68, J.D. '71, is an attorney with the Stockton firm of Neumiller and Beardslee. He is vice president of CAAA, a member of the Law School Alumni Association and a longtime member of the Davis Chancellor's Club.
Gene Pendergast Jr. '61, is a partner in the law firm Schei, Pendergast & Collins in Sacramento. Pendergast is a former UC regent and past chair (1978-82) and member (1973-85) of the UC Davis Foundation.
A UC regent and current president of CAAA, Charles Soderquist, M.S. '73, Ph.D. '78, is president of the Technology Development Center in West Sacramento. Soderquist also serves on the Graduate School of Management Dean's Advisory Council and the Dean's Advisory Council of the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences.
Robert Tate is a shareholder in the firm of Tate, Propp, Beggs and Sugimoto. Tate is chair of the UC Davis Medical Center Legacy Committee and a member of the UCDMC Leadership Council. He is also chair of the UCDMC Ronald McDonald House campaign.
C. John Tupper is a professor emeritus of internal medicine and is known as the founding dean of the UC Davis School of Medicine. Tupper is past president of the American Medical Association and received the prestigious Sacramento Regional Pride Award.
President and founder of Gourmet Express, Norman Weil '73, J.D. '76, is a former deputy district attorney for the City of San Francisco. Weil is a current member and former board member of CAAA.
James Willett is a partner with the Sacramento law firm of Downey, Brand, Seymour & Rohwer, where he specializes in areas of real estate planning, estate taxes, trusts and probate. He is a former chair and trustee of the UC Davis Foundation and a member of the executive committee for the Students First Campaign.
