The University of California, Davis has hired two experienced fund-raisers to join its development staff.
Anne Bishop, most recently development director for the music department at UC Berkeley, became UC Davis' director of major gifts for the Center for the Arts campaign, on Nov. 1.
John R. Garamendi Jr. begins as director of corporate and foundation relations on Dec. 1. He, too, comes to UC Davis from Berkeley, where he is currently serving as regional development director.
"We are exceptionally fortunate to recruit professionals the caliber of Anne Bishop and John Garamendi to our program," said Virginia Kelsch, UC Davis associate vice chancellor for university relations. "They will enhance our development efforts for the arts and strengthen our partnerships with corporations and foundations."
As major gifts director for UC Davis, Bishop will concentrate on gifts of $50,000 and above. Her primary area of fund-raising responsibility is the $30 million campaign for a new performing arts center.
This new campus facility will contain a 1,800-seat main hall and 250-seat studio theater, as well as rehearsal space, hospitality areas and up-to-date production facilities. Offering on-site parking and easy access from Interstate 80, the center is scheduled to open in 2002.
Prior to her five-year stint leading UC Berkeley's "Campaign for Music," Bishop worked as director of development for the Low Income Housing Fund and as director of major gifts for the University of San Francisco.
In a career in public affairs and development that began full-time in 1986, she has been associated with the Berkeley Roundtable on the International Economy, UC Berkeley's "Keeping the Promise" capital campaign and the Sierra Club Campaign. She is a 1972 graduate of UC Berkeley, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in English and a Standard Elementary Teaching Credential.
Garamendi holds a bachelor's degree from UC Berkeley and is completing a Master of Business Administration at California State University, Hayward. He has served as an events coordinator and fundraiser on several local and statewide political campaigns as well as assistant director for alumni affairs and community outreach in UC's Office of the President. Prior to joining UC Berkeley's $1.1 billion "Campaign for the New Century," Garamendi was a Peace Corps volunteer in Paraguay.
As UC Davis' new corporate and foundation relations director, Garamendi will help coordinate and manage the institution's approaches and proposals to businesses and private foundations. He will also play a key role in developing corporate partnerships and sponsorships for the Center for the Arts.
