From rescuing disaster victims to helping countries develop agriculture crops, alumni of the University of California, Davis, have distinguished themselves through outstanding service to the campus and the country; the Cal Aggie Alumni Association will honor 35 of these individuals at a ceremony and dinner on Friday, Oct. 25.
The alumni association will bestow its four annual awards and will also acknowledge 31 alumni and campus supporters who were honored earlier this year by the university's individual schools, colleges and the athletic Hall of Fame. The evening celebration begins at 5:30 p.m. with a reception and entertainment by Capitol Strings, continues with dinner at 7 p.m. and concludes with the awards program.
Tickets for the event, which will be in the Walter A. Buehler Alumni and Visitors Center at UC Davis, are $30 each and can be obtained by calling the alumni association at (916) 752-0286 or (800) 242-GRAD (California only). Seating is limited, so reservations should be made early.
The following individuals will receive Cal Aggie Alumni Association awards:
Wayne A. Bartholomew will receive the Jerry W. Fielder Memorial Award, given in recognition of service to the alumni association, the UC Davis Foundation and the university. Bartholomew, a health and business consultant from Davis, has demonstrated tireless commitment to UC Davis, the foundation and the alumni association spanning three decades. Bartholomew received his bachelor's degree from UC Davis in 1964 and J.D. degree in 1971 and has since dedicated himself to the task of raising funds for various campus projects, helping make possible construction of Recreation Hall and the Walter A. Buehler Alumni and Visitors Center. In addition, in cooperation with UC Davis geriatrics researchers, he helped develop an innovative computerized program to provide overall health care plans for individuals in long-term care facilities, and he was a leader in the establishment of an upward mobility training program for female and minority health-care givers.
Robert B. Bushnell, specialist emeritus with UC Davis Veterinary Medicine Extension (Extension veterinarian) and a recognized leader in research on bovine mastitis, milk quality and dairy food safety, will receive the Distinguished Achievement Award. This award is presented to alumni who have distinguished themselves professionally, in the community or in public service and whose entire lifetime reflects exemplary and outstanding performance and achievements. Under Bushnell's direction, a laboratory for the investigation of mastitis/food-safety problems was established at the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, leading to the development of procedures for controlling mastitis in the field. Bushnell was instrumental in establishing new dairy industry standards for sanitation and modern milking and pasteurization equipment; he now plays a key role in planning and implementing a World Bank project to promote mass immunizations in production animals in many Middle Eastern countries. Bushnell received his bachelor's degree from UC Davis in 1953 and a D.V.M. degree in 1956.
The Emil M. Mrak International Award, given to UC Davis alumni who have distinguished themselves in their careers or service outside the United States, will be presented to Jerome F. Harrington, chief executive officer and chair of the board of the International Research Institute (IRI). Harrington has contributed to global food production concerns for over 50 years and continues to work toward a more equitable international distribution of the means and methods of agriculture. For the past 45 years, Harrington has directed IRI's work in more than 20 countries, from the tropics of the Amazon to the desert regions of the Sultanate of Oman. He has implemented projects that improve production of coffee, tea, cotton, rice and wheat, bolster animal nutrition, and make more effective use of pastures, soils and irrigation. Harrington has led IRI in implementing agro-enterprise activities in the privatization efforts of such organizations as USAID, the World Bank and the InterAmerican Development Bank. He attended UC Davis for several years before the campus closed for World War II and then completed his studies at UC Berkeley in 1944.
This year's recipient of the Young Alumnus(na) of the Year Award, given to UC Davis alumni who have made outstanding contributions to their profession, community or the university, is Mark S. Ghilarducci. Recipients of this award must be no older than age 35 or they must have received their first UC Davis degree within the past 10 years. Ghilarducci, a 1987 graduate, is deputy chief of the Fire and Rescue Division of the State Office of Emergency Services. After graduating from UC Davis, Ghilarducci was employed by the California Governor's Office of Emergency Services and quickly became an acknowledged expert in seismology and earthquakes. With his network of fellow experts, he began to lay the foundation of a new program, the Urban Search and Rescue Response System. The system he created in the aftermath of the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake has become the standard now used throughout the state and the basis for the National Urban Search and Rescue Program. Ghilarducci's team has gone on to use this system in response to numerous disasters across the nation.
In addition to these four awards, 31 alumni and campus supporters have received Citations for Excellence following their selection earlier this year by other campus units.
