WHAT: Veterinarians and animal scientists from throughout the western United States will gather at the University of California, Davis, to discuss the latest research developments in livestock and poultry diseases during the 13th annual Western Food Animal Disease Research Conference. Speakers will address issues important to maintaining the health and safety of the nation's food supply.
WHEN: Wednesday and Thursday, April 1-2, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Friday, April 3, 8 a.m. to noon
WHERE: Room 170 Schalm Hall, located in the Health Sciences Complex, just north of the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital.
TOPICS: Approximately 70 research papers will be presented covering a wide variety of topics including:
• effects of bovine growth hormone (BST) on dairy cows
• predictions of calf survival
• antibiotic residue screening of milk
• health and management of swine
• recombinant vaccine for rinderpest control
• Salmonella in California dairies
• arthritis and encephalitis in goats
• deformities among calves resulting from acorn foraging
KEYNOTE SPEAKER: Dr. Frederick A. Murphy, dean of the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, will talk about "New and Emerging Infectious Diseases" at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 1, following the dinner at Putah Creek Lodge. An internationally recognized virologist, Murphy served as director of the Center for Infectious Diseases, part of the national Centers for Disease Control, before coming to UC Davis last year.
