UC Davis Invites Parents for Special Weekend

The University of California, Davis, invites the families of students to experience campus life during Family Weekend, Nov. 13-15, an annual event that drew over 400 families last year. Sponsored by the Cal Aggie Alumni Association and the Family Weekend Student Committee, the activities and events include mini-lectures, facility and campus tours, athletic and cultural events, a barbecue and Sunday brunch. Family Weekend, formerly called Parents Weekend, is designed to present a broad view of the academic, cultural and social opportunities available to students and the community. "Although this is only our sixth year, Family Weekend is becoming a popular campus event with families attending from all over the state and as far away as Minnesota," said Linda Wallace, director of external relations for the alumni association. The weekend begins with registration on Friday, Nov. 13, from noon to 7 p.m. That afternoon parents may attend lecture classes and at night can participate in a variety of events such as the Astronomy Club's star-gazing program at 8-9:30 p.m. or a clarinet concert sponsored by UC Davis Presents at 8 p.m. Saturday's activities begin with a welcome address and campus update from Chancellor Theodore L. Hullar at 9:30 a.m. Following that, families may participate in a barn tour, watch a demonstration of computer-aided manufacturing, tour the X-ray crystallography facility, or hear lectures on such topics as AIDS research at UC Davis, global warming, the impact of the recession and state budget cuts on students, and the job market for college graduates. Throughout the day, representatives from student organizations and campus programs will provide information about their activities and services at the Student Life Faire. A Family Weekend barbecue scheduled at 4:30-6:30 p.m. will precede the evening's events, which will include a performance by the University Chamber Singers and a play, "Tartuffe." Sunday morning, an elegant buffet brunch at 10 a.m. will feature entertainment by The Humerus Comedy Troupe and Gospel Choir. Families are also invited to attend the many art gallery and museum exhibits, theater presentations and sporting events taking place on campus throughout the weekend. The registration fee for the weekend is $25 per family. Tickets for the Friday clarinet concert are $10; for the Saturday barbecue, $6.50 per person; and for the Sunday brunch, $12.50 per person. Reservations should be made by contacting the alumni office at (916) 752-0286.
