Trying to keep up with the World Wide Web savvy of today's high-school students and recruit them to the university at the same time, UC Davis will soon launch an interactive Web site.
Drawing on other youth-oriented sites for its teen-friendly design, the site uses animation and photos to offer a quick-click resource for information about UC Davis. Its March 1 launch coincides with the day high-school seniors and transfer students can learn whether they've been admitted to UC Davis.
"Research shows that high-school students are using the Web so much more for checking out schools and gathering information on selected colleges," says Leslie Campbell, senior associate director of Undergraduate Admissions and Outreach Services.
She and another member of the admissions staff brought the idea for the site back from a higher-education marketing conference focused on the need for universities to reach beyond the traditional ways of recruiting students.
As a pilot project, the site is geared toward the 2,000 admitted students choosing to major in the Division of Humanities, Arts and Cultural Studies. By e-mail, the dean of the division will invite those students to check out the site.
When the students log in, they'll be greeted by name. As they cruise through the site, the students will learn more about academic majors and student services, be reminded about deadlines in the admissions process, and find out about life outside class and in the Davis community. And they can get answers to their individual questions about academic majors -- directly from a student affairs officer in the dean's office.
Later, the project will be expanded to serve prospective applicants for study in the division for fall 2002 and then in other areas.
