UC Davis Police Investigate Computer Thefts

Police officers at the University of California, Davis, have launched a burglary investigation following yesterday's discovery that computer systems had been stolen from a campus building. The equipment was stolen from the computer laboratory in AOB IV. Twelve Apple Macintosh II computers, estimated to be worth more than $30,000, were taken from the two-story building sometime between Friday evening and Sunday noon, when a lab attendant opening the room for students noticed the missing equipment. "This is the second major computer theft to hit our campus in five months," said Lt. Royal Davidson, the UC Davis police officer coordinating the investigation. Last June, more than $40,000 worth of computer systems was stolen from Mrak Hall. That case, according to Davidson, remains under investigation. "There are similarities between the Mrak Hall burglary and the one that occurred in AOB IV," said Davidson. The computers were removed by prying them loose from the table tops where they had been secured with lock-down devices. Also it does not appear that force was used to gain entry to the laboratory. Five investigators from the UC Davis police department are working on the case. The officers all have experience as detectives and their expertise ranges from knowledge of computer hardware systems to the fencing of stolen property, said Davidson. If anyone has information they would like to share with the police department, they should call (916) 752-1727.
