High-school seniors and community college students have applied to the University of California, Davis, in record numbers, for an all-time high of 26,962 applications for fall 1999. The figure represents an 11.4 percent increase over last year's applications.
A total of 22,243 high-school seniors applied to UC Davis, up 12 percent from 1998, and 4,719 transfer students applied, an increase of 8.8 percent. A total of 20,690 California freshmen applied, up 11.9 percent, while 3,731 state community college students applied, an increase of 8.7 percent.
Across the UC system, the number of applications increased 8.1 percent. Applications from high-school seniors increased 7.8 percent and from transfer students, 9.2 percent. Those from California freshmen increased 6.4 percent, while those from state community college students increased 9.2 percent.
Applications to UC Davis from California high-school seniors increased in all ethnic groups by the following percentages:
• African American, 9.7
• American Indian, 2.0
• Asian American, 22.7
• Chicano, 9.6
• Filipino American, 16.9
• Latino, 8.9
• White, East Indian/Pakistani and Other, 25.5
The number of California high-school seniors not identifying their ethnicity decreased by 1,578 or 43.1 percent.
"The increase in applications reinforces the academic reputation and strong appeal among students that UC Davis has enjoyed over the years," says Gary Tudor, director of Undergraduate Admissions and Outreach. "We're also gratified that our recruitment efforts continue to reach more students and their families."
Tudor says the campus's outreach efforts this year included a new mailing to 27,000 UC eligible high-school students and increased e-mail contact with those making inquiries. UC Davis also encouraged more high-school and transfer students to visit the campus, and more UC Davis alumni and current students made presentations at schools and hosted high-school students who visited UC Davis.
UC Davis will begin mailing acceptances to about 13,700 freshmen on March 1.
