UC Davis Research Awards Grow 40 Percent

UC Davis researchers brought in $164 million in grants and contracts last year, a 10.5 percent increase over 1991-92 and a 40 percent increase over five years ago. "Our strengths are in multidisciplinary and multi-investigator research," says Robert Shelton, vice chancellor for research. "While individual investigators continue to attract sizable grants and contracts, we have seen significant growth in multi-investigator programs." Public moneys represent over 80 percent of the total extramural funds for research. Recently established organized research units within and across colleges include the Center for Engineering Plants for Resistance Against Pathogens (National Science Foundation), the Center for Ecological Health Research (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency), the Center for Environmental Health Sciences (National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences), the Center for Neuroscience (National Institutes of Health and others), and Facilities for Controlled Environment for Plant Biology Research (NSF). Ongoing centers of note include the Biomarkers of Exposure to Hazardous Substances and the Agricultural Health and Safety Center.
