In its first performance of the year, the Nexus Modern Dance Collective, a 12-member group of students from the University of California, Davis, will perform at the Veterans Memorial Center for three nights, Jan. 23-25, at 8 p.m.
Nexus, which means a coming together, is a student-run dance company that has a 15-year record of combining experimental movement with traditional modern dance forms. The evening performances will feature both undergraduate and graduate students who work together in developing their own choreography.
In one selection choreographed by a student studying design, the dancers will examine the issue of bulimia. Another dance will be completely improvised.
"Nexus enjoys tackling challenges. For example, in one piece, we rework traditional fairy tales to be non-sexist," according to Theresa Castor, a Nexus dance member.
The theater is located in Davis on 14th and B streets. Tickets for the performance are $7 for general admission and $6 for students and children under 12. Tickets may be purchased at the door.
