The public is invited to attend an open house Tuesday, Aug. 31 to learn more about UC Davis' future Tahoe Environmental Research Center. The facility will provide researchers with on-site laboratory space for studies of the Tahoe Basin and the Sierra Nevada.
Scientists in such diverse fields as atmospheric science, engineering, geology, limnology and forest dynamics will be able to use the center for basic research and for solving Lake Tahoe's complex environmental problems. The new center also will accommodate K-12 school activities and public lectures. The project will include restoration of the former historic fish hatchery east of Tahoe City at the intersection of Highway 128 and Lake Forest Drive.
The $12 million center will be built using private funds, half of which have been raised so far in UC Davis' Campaign for Tahoe.
Those attending the open house will have a chance to learn more about the project, the design process and the permitting and environmental review now being initiated. In addition, public comments are welcomed on issues to be addressed in the permitting and environmental review processes.
The meeting and open house will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Courtview Room of Granlibakken Conference Center, 72 Granlibakken Rd. in Tahoe City.
