Dr. John Madigan, a UC Davis professor of veterinary medicine, and fourth-year veterinary student Jacqueline Whittemore, will return tonight, Friday, Sept. 24, after spending a week in North Carolina rescuing livestock from the floods that followed Hurricane Floyd.
Madigan and Whittemore, both Woodland residents, will return to Sacramento International Airport shortly after 9 p.m. They will be available this weekend to talk with reporters about their experiences in airlifting horses, cows and hogs and working with the military, animal welfare organizations and private citizens to provide food and medical care to stranded animals.
Madigan is the associate director of the large animal clinic at the UC Davis Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital and an expert in equine and emergency veterinary medicine. He also heads up the School of Veterinary Medicine's emergency response team, which was trained and authorized by the California Office of Emergency Services to rescue animals during disasters. While in North Carolina, Madigan and Whittemore used a special sling, which Madigan helped design, for use in airlifting horses from inaccessible sites.
Madigan can be reached during the weekend by pager at (530) 757-0220 or by cellular phone at (530) 304-1212.
Digitized images of their rescue activities are available upon request.
