UC's Pest Project Creates Cybertools for Virtual Farming

For the last 15 years the UC Davis-based Integrated Pest Management Project has been building an enormous storehouse of scientific knowledge to help the state's multibillion dollar agricultural industry take much of the guesswork out of coping with invading insects, nematodes, fungi, weeds and other pests. Now this body of knowledge is finding its way into cyberspace so that farmers and crop management specialists can net information more readily than ever. The pest scientists and computer experts who work for IPM have teamed up to develop a new "home page" on the World Wide Web that opens a virtual door to the fruits of the university's pest management program. Growers of more than 50 different crops can find online information on all their major pests -- with color photographs, easy-to-understand biologies, monitoring methods and treatment strategies. In a couple of months, consumers also will be able to access information about home and garden pests. The Web address for IPM's home page is http://www.ipm.ucdavis.edu.
