U.N. ambassador to speak at law school

U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Bill Richardson will deliver the UC Davis law school commencement address at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 24. A former congressman from New Mexico, Richardson was named to his post by President Clinton last December. He is a member of the president's cabinet and is also a member of the National Security Council. Richardson has served as a diplomatic "trouble-shooter," working to free hostages in several countries including Burma, Iraq, North Korea and Sudan. Recently President Clinton dispatched Richardson to Zaire to try to resolve the growing conflicts there. Last year, he held a historic meeting with Fidel Castro during which he successfully negotiated the release of three political prisoners. The law school's 29th commencement will be held from 10:30 a.m. to noon outdoors in the UC Davis Health Sciences Quadrangle. If it rains, the ceremony will be moved indoors to Freeborn Hall, with overflow seating to be in Room 1100 of the Social Sciences and Humanities Building.
