• Sustainable Agriculture Workshop and Information Fair -- Nov.22, Buehler Alumni and Visitors Center, UC Davis. Sponsored by the UC Davis-based Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Program, this daylong event is designed to help school teachers, ag professionals and farm advisors better understand and apply the concepts and practices of sustainable agriculture, and get to know the many California organizations involved with sustainable ag education issues. The UC Davis-based UC Agricultural Issues Center will hold a daylong public conference examining the conflicts arising where urban areas are pressing into California's farmland. Speakers will focus on agricultural technologies, management practices and land- use policies. University researchers and industry leaders from throughout the country will address issues such as variety selection, irrigation techniques, forage quality, pest management, nutrition, production practices, marketing economics and wildlife interactions. Potential uses of sewage sludge or "biosolids" in agriculture will be discussed by agriculturists, academics and representatives of regulatory, environmental and wastewater treatment agencies. Topics will include crop and soil responses; legal, liability and economic issues; and practical experiences with biosolids. The conference is co-sponsored by the UC Davis-based UC Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Program.
