What: Richard W. Riley, U.S. Secretary of Education, will give this year's commencement address to graduating seniors in the College of Letters and Science.
Riley will also be available following the program to talk to news media about educational issues.
President Clinton selected Riley for the secretary's position in 1993 based on educational reform policies instituted in South Carolina when Riley was a two-term governor. President Clinton has been able to sign into law six groundbreaking education initiatives -- a set of programs that span from kindergarten through college -- due in large part to the efforts of Riley building bipartisan coalitions. These initiatives include the expansion and streamlining of the college loan program; the creation of laws to help local school districts ensure that children can learn in safety; and the enactment of programs that develop links between schools and the work place.
When: Saturday, June 17, 9 a.m. to 11:30 p.m.
Riley's 15-minute commencement address is scheduled to begin at 9:20 a.m. Riley will be available to talk to the media at 11:30 a.m.
Where: Manager's office, 2nd floor, southeast corner
Recreation Hall, UC Davis

Background: This spring 5,201 graduates are expected to receive diplomas at UC Davis from three colleges and four professional schools.
Approximately 2,332 students in the College of Letters and Science are expected to graduate in two separate programs at Recreation Hall.
