Karen Nicholes McVarish, a UC Davis vegetable crops employee and student intern under chef David Smith-Walsh at the University Club on the University of California, Davis, campus, recently won the seventh annual recipe competition at the Asparagus Festival held in Stockton. Her "Light Fresh Asparagus Soup," taste-tested by her husband, impressed the judges with a distinct asparagus flavor.
