The UC Davis Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital is requesting the public's help in locating a pale pink Moluccan cockatoo, which disappeared from the hospital between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. Monday.
This is the first time in the teaching hospital's nearly 30-year history that an animal has been taken, according to hospital administrators.
The three-year-old bird, named Melanie, is about 18 inches tall, was wearing a clear plastic medical collar and has no permanent tail feathers. When she is happy or is offered food she frequently says, "Hi, Melanie."
The bird, which has been in residency at the hospital for the past year, was being used to teach veterinary students about the husbandry, care and behavior of exotic birds. Melanie is not acclimated to lengthy exposure to winter temperatures.
Anyone with information that might help locate Melanie is asked to call and leave an anonymous message on the UC Davis Police Department's Crime Tip Line at (530) 752-9944.
For media visuals, another Moluccan cockatoo is available at the teaching hospital.
