Bradd Barr, associate professor in the California Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory System, received the American Veterinary Medicine Association Council on Research 1995 Excellence in Bovine Research Award. Barr was one of the first pathologists to identify a previously unrecognized protozoan parasite as a cause of abortion in dairy cattle. The parasite, neosporosis, is now recognized as the major diagnosed cause of abortion in dairy cattle in the state.
