Weiss Named Director of University Cultural Programs

Steven H. Weiss has been named director of University Cultural Programs, the main campus unit responsible for scheduling performing arts events and major speakers at the University of California, Davis. A 1986 honors graduate in managerial economics from UC Davis, Weiss assumes control of a program with a $1.2 million budget that brings to the campus and Sacramento internationally known artists in music, dance, drama and other art forms. The program also sponsors lectures by prominent figures in politics, human rights, international relations and other fields. Weiss has worked for University Cultural Programs since 1986 as assistant director. In addition to his administrative duties, Weiss directs the program's Distinguished Speakers Series. While a student at UC Davis from 1984-86, Weiss was director of Student Forums, scheduling lectures and special events. In 1986, he served as deputy campaign manager for California state Senator Gary Hart. He also has served as vice chair of the Davis Community Television Board of Directors, and is the treasurer of California Presenters, a statewide organization of performing arts presenters. In addition to his bachelor's degree from UC Davis, Weiss has an MBA in marketing from Golden Gate University. Richard Matheny, vice chancellor for university relations at UC Davis, said, "Steve is uniquely qualified for this position. He understands both the national and capital region arts scene. "He has been a significant part of the success of our cultural arts and lectures program. I'm confident that the high standards and diversity of programming will continue under his leadership." Weiss succeeds James H. Wockenfuss, who retired after a nearly 40-year career in the performing arts. Before coming to UC Davis in 1985, Wockenfuss had been director of the Hancher Auditorium and adjunct assistant professor of theatre arts at the University of Iowa since 1970. He was director of the Louisiana State University Union Theater from 1963-70, and manager of the Wisconsin Union Theater from 1954-63. At UC Davis, a University Cultural Programs endowment has been created to sustain the arts and community outreach programs established by Wockenfuss. The fund will be used for performer fees, outreach and residency activities, and for the commissioning of new works or collaborations. Commemorative gifts for Wockenfuss' retirement may be made to UC Davis Presents. Checks, which should be made payable to UC Regents, may be sent to UC Davis Presents, UC Davis, Davis, California 95616. For more information, call (916) 757-3488.
