When folks tell Deanne Vochatzer they're looking forward to seeing her on television this summer as coach of the U.S. women's Olympic track and field team, her reply is usually, "Oh, I hope not!" Vochatzer, head women's track coach at UC Davis, relishes her Olympic coaching opportunity, but knows all too well that hers is a sport in which a successful coach remains in the background. Her charge is to smoothly manage her team's affairs away from the spotlight. "This is a job where there are no excuses," says Vochatzer, who will coordinate a team of approximately 50 U.S. women competitors. As head track coach, her job is administrative rather than strategic, ensuring that athletes have the best possible environment in which to compete and that they are prepared and informed about training and competition schedules. Having finished UC Davis' competitive season, Vochatzer now can turn her attention to Atlanta in preparation for the U.S. Olympic Trials, which will determine the makeup of the Olympic team. She is most accessible Monday, Wednesday and Friday in her campus office between the hours of 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
