Gorman Museum 1316 Hart Hall University of California, Davis Hours: 1 to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Friday, or by appointment Artists: George Longfish and Jaune Quick-to-See Smith Leading contemporary Native American artists Jaune Quick-to-See Smith and George Longfish will exhibit their works this winter. Both artists draw upon native symbolism to infuse their work with native traditions and beliefs, while using non-native commercially based icons to undermine the stereotyped representations. A longtime UC Davis faculty member, Longfish directed the Gorman Museum for more than 20 years for the campus's Native American studies department. He and Quick-to-See Smith have been friends for 22 years, since Quick-to-See Smith visited Longfish on campus in 1974. In addition to their visual art, both artists have published essays about the history and placement of contemporary Native American art. Both have a commitment and dedication to furthering the works of Native American artists. The C.N. Gorman Museum is part of the Native American studies department, and is dedicated to Native American artists and other artists whose works address cultural, social and political issues of the Americas.
