The artists whose work will be represented in the exhibition, co-sponsored by the UC Davis art department, are Alan Crockett, Peter Davis, Kent Fries, Ted Hirsch, David Seiler and Deirdre White. Crockett works with mixed media and 8-mm film, and will be represented by an installation constructed in the gallery. He is interested in exploring the possible sculptural relationships between moving images and fixed forms. Davis and White are both figurative painters who will be represented by recent large canvases. They used traditional representation as a framework for exploring painterly effects and emotional content. Fries will be represented by a steel and steel cable sculpture with various dimensions. His work often includes devices that allow his sculptures to be manipulated by the viewer to alter the piece's composition and possible meaning. Hirsch will have several recent low-relief wood sculptures. Hirsch hand carves and paints panels of hardwood into metaphorical landscapes that suggest the tension between modern civilization and the natural world. Seiler combines large, mural-sized photographs and paintings on paper into dark and ominous figurative works. The exhibition and reception are free and open to the public.
