Racial discrimination in the military will be discussed Tuesday, April 19, at UC Davis by Bruce Yamashita, who recently won a publicized lawsuit based on his discharge from the Marine Corps Officer Candidate School. Born in Hawaii and a third-generation Japanese American, Yamashita attended the training school in 1989. He had been student body president and captain of his high school's baseball and football teams, graduated with a bachelor's in political science from the University of Hawaii and studied law at Georgetown University. Yamashita's talk, "Guarding with Glory," is one of a series of events, including music, films and a cultural fair open to the public April 18-23 during Asian Pacific Cultural Week at UC Davis. The talk will begin at 6:30 p.m. in MUII of the Memorial Union; Yamashita will be available for media interviews earlier, during a reception at 1 p.m. at the Cross-Cultural Center.
