What: About 25 firefighters from four area fire departments and representatives of Yolo County Environmental Health Services will practice responding as a team to a major hazardous materials incident. News media are welcome to attend the drills.
When: 9 a.m. to noon., Wednesday through Friday, March 24-26.
Where: The old fire station at the UC Davis Airport.
Visuals: The best visuals will begin about 9:30 a.m. In these three identical drills, firefighters will respond to an incident involving a toxic chemical that could be found in Yolo County. Wearing colorful protective suits, they will evaluate the spill and mitigate the hazard. After teammates decontaminate the firefighters by scrubbing their suits, others will check the condition of the firefighters, including their pulse and blood pressure.
Background: This is the fourth series of monthly drills since the Yolo County Hazardous Materials Emergency Response Team was established in December. Team participants include Yolo County and fire departments from Davis, West Sacramento, Woodland and UC Davis.
Phil Davis, assistant chief of operations and training for the UC Davis fire department, says the team was formed to handle major hazardous materials incidents because no one fire department has the resources to do so.
Directions and Parking: From Interstate 80 take Highway 113 north and exit at Hutchison Drive. Turn left at Hutchison Drive and cross the overpass. Turn left onto Hopkins Road and proceed beyond the main entrance to the airport. Turn left at the next entrance. Park in the designated area on the south side of the entrance. The old fire station is about 30 yards ahead.
Leave a media business card on your dashboard as a parking permit, unless your vehicle is already marked.
