You Are What You Wear

How people use clothing to express their ethnic or racial identity will be one of the themes of an upcoming UC Davis conference on fashion and style. "Style, Fashion & the Negotiation of Identities" will be held April 23 and 24 at the Walter A. Buehler Alumni and Visitors Center on the UC Davis campus. The influence of the media in fashioning style images also will be considered. National and international speakers, including participants from Italy and England, will focus on such areas as gang identity, the three-piece suit and the politics of masculinity, and the practice by West Africans and African Americans of borrowing clothing styles from each other. An art exhibit and a performance art show will be part of the conference.
