Youth Learn to Be Good Sports at Camps

More than 2,000 young people from the Sacramento region are playing sports at UC Davis summer camps. Scores of instructional programs, ranging from baseball to roller hockey, are now in full swing for kids 4 to 18 years old. "The income generated from these sports camps, which range in price from $50 for the girls' mini-soccer program to $380 for the boys' basketball camp, bring in more than $600,000 to the campus," says Al Beaird, UC Davis sports camp director. "A portion of the money goes toward the UC Davis athletic budget." A major component of the summer camps is the award-winning National Youth Sports Program that regionally brings 350 low-income youths from Yolo and Solano counties for five weeks of sports instruction, science projects and other college-related experiences. These students are not charged fees for participating because federal grants and donations cover their expenses. One of the highlights of the summer program is when the UC Davis campers challenge the program campers from California State University, Sacramento, to an "Olympic Challenge" track meet at UC Davis on Saturday, July 13. Some 600 kids will be participating.
