Youth Sports Camp Teaches Kids Life Skills

What: Some 300 local youths ages 10 to 16 are on campus five weeks as part of the award-winning National Youth Sports Program at UC Davis. The youngsters, all of whom come from low-income families, learn swimming, soccer, tennis, math and science, as well as life skills. When: 11 a.m. to noon; Tuesday, July 22; Open house Where: Toomey Field, football stadium; UC Davis Visuals: Kids on campus learning sports and in the classroom. Background: UC Davis received $66,000 from the National Collegiate Athletic Association to operate the camp, now in its third year. The association supports nearly 200 of these camps around the country. The community and the campus provided another $130,000 in donations to support the UC Davis program. Cash donations and bicycles are still welcome.
