Exam and visa requirements for international applicants
International students need to meet exam and visa requirements for admission eligibility to UC Davis.
English proficiency exam requirements
Success at UC Davis depends on a strong understanding of the English language. You must demonstrate English proficiency if you studied in the United States for fewer than three years and received instruction in a language other than English before you arrived.
Provide proof of English proficiency with one of the following:
- Specific AP and IB exams
- Transferable college coursework
- Test of English as a Foreign Language, or TOEFL
- International English Language Testing System, or IELTS
- Duolingo English Test
Any of these also satisfy the UC Entry Level Writing Requirement, or ELWR.
Visa requirements
International students need a passport and temporary visa as well as the appropriate forms and documentation to attend school in the United States. All international students must obtain a valid passport and F-1 or J-1 visa. The process to apply for a visa for the United States can be confusing. It is very important you follow the necessary steps to obtain the correct status to enter the country. The UC Davis Services for International Students and Scholars, or SISS, office is available to assist you with visa and immigration issues.
SISS hosts an orientation at the beginning of the school year to help international students acquaint themselves with regulations to maintain their visa status and information on work options with an F-1 or J-1 visa. SISS also provides support with financial, personal and academic issues as well as valuable information on what life is like as a UC Davis international student.
